Mottos 10/14

Some Mottos can't be acronymous,
b/c deleting letters dilutes the literal intent,
erasing the content
and context
like the newest text book edition
of edited history.
A motto,
several simple words,
can define and capitulate
a young woman's education,
giving her confidence to say,
"As we grow in age, may we grow in grace"
living it more fully than any morning chapel.
A motto
can hang silently on collegiate walls
and echo,
refining who I am through study and service,
trial and error,
challenge and triumph
to be "strong truths well lived".
A motto can challenge you,
make you wrestle with all you know
and define it,
give you stamina as you gain skills,
knowing that you are always prepared,
"Semper Paratus".

 We all live under words,
on billboards,
street signs,
and even name tags,
but who pays attention
to the sentences we write
with our daily lives,
the chapter we create in our cities,
the libraries we build just by living.
Some mottos will always be an acronym;
4 simple letters
etched in my skin,
defying explanation,
stating the most obvious;
some words I just can't live without.
A.M.D.G.
Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam
To the Greater Glory of God.
